|Agha, Sheikh and State: The Social and Political Structures of Kurdistan Volume I (1992)|
|Author: Martin van Bruinessen
Translator: Amjad Hussain
|Combining history and international politics, and often using personal observations from his travels to Kurdistan, Martin van Broensen focuses on the actions of Kurdish leaders and local communities. This book deals the impact of ‘primordial loyalties’ (or loyalties to the family, tribe, agha/tribal chieftain, and the sheikh) to Kurdish social and political structures. Kurdish nationalism is defined as standing in ambivalent relation to tribal and religious loyalties.
The importance of this book lies in its methodological mixture of both field survey and anecdotal evidence, in addition to Kurdish ancient history. The author has spent a lot of time in many parts of Kurdistan. The study also includes analysis on Kurdish dialects and the state’s role in the development of tribal structures and orientations. This is an indispensable text for analyzing the Kurds of Iraq and their current political situation.
